Extra Credit Blog

For this blog, I watched Supersize me. Well one, I was just surprised in general what McDonalds can do to you and how unhealthy it actually is.Morgan Spurlock, the producer, editor, and main character, did a fantastic job getting his point across that McDonalds is unhealthy and horrible for you. Morgan used a lot of voice over, cartoons, and black screens to get his point across. Also when it came to talking to the doctor, arguably one of the most important people in this documentary, he kept everything but the doctor soundless. He wanted to emphasize the importance of what the doctor was saying because people trust doctors. He used cartoons to show and symbolize different things also. People are entertained by cartoons or at least I was. When he was demonstrating how the chicken dies and how many McDonalds there are in the world. Because of the cartoons I remember small details like this. He also did what I was planning on doing with the small black blank screen with white words to show what he is about to talk about. He also kept the camera on him a lot of the time. He did a lot of self filming of him eating or of him in his car. As scenes were changing he played little upbeat songs. Not any songs with words in particular but songs that have a catchy tune. This symbolizes a mood change or a different topic. Over all Spurlock did a fantastic job showing his side of the story. If you watch this movie at the end you never want to eat fast food ever again. I believe after this movie came out McDonalds actually did away with the Supersize option. This just shows that he did such a good job even McDonalds itself was worried that it would effect the populations opinion of the fast food chain.

Freshman 15 Storyboard

Open: To a blank screen that says the Freshman 15 and start to the song of I Love College by Asher Roth. Possible start at Man, I love college, ay! I love drinking, ay! I love women, ay! I love college. Now if everybody would please. Put their drink as high as they can As high as they can (As high as they can) And repeat after me. Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Freshmen! Freshmen! Freshmen! Freshmen! I chose this song because it has an upbeat tempo and shows that college is a good time. If you find this song to inappropriate just let me know I can swop it out easily for something else. I just believe this song is prefect because it includes the binge drinking part about college freshman. As this song pops up I’m going to have a bunch of different pictures of people all enjoying themselves. These pictures will be both pictures that I take as well as pictures I find off the Internet. These pictures will all show a common day in the life of a college student everything from walking to class to eating with friends to parties. The pictures will then stop on a picture of a college party and I will say in a voice that is over my movie something along the lines of “With all this fun how often do you think about your health or exercise. With our college meal plans all you can eat dinning halls, stress levels, and occasional alcohol intake we are designed to fail. Then I will have a picture of the meal plans that The University of Kentucky offers.
I will keep this picture up and as I name off the places you can use these meal plans I will switch to those pictures.
( https://uky.campusdish.com/) I will say “ The average calorie intake for a adult man is 2550 calories while it is around 1940 for a adult woman (http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/) .You can use your meal plans at Bowman’s den where they have some of the best fast food places in America like chick Fil A where the number of calories on a meal swipe can be up to 1100 and at panda express where the average number of calories can be 1000 and at Subway where the Average meal swipe can be up too 1100 calories.” I got this information from actually visiting bowman’s den, there in front of the lines they actually have big 6 foot signs saying what they provide and potentially how many calories it is equal to”. Or if you want you can head on over to K lair and get something off there meal plan that is around 700 calories maybe if you aren’t feeling any of those you can head on over to Ovid’s and get some food that is still very unhealthy. Some of these places offer food swipes that are already half the number of calories you are suppose to eat in one day.” Each time I name somewhere else to eat I will put a picture of it up and continue talking about that food place on campus. I still need to take pictures of all of the dinning areas but that shouldn’t be too hard.
I will transition to dining halls and on the screen it will say “Dining halls.” Each time I transition I want it to go completely silent and have the subject I am about to talk about appear on the screen in a completely black screen with white letter. Maybe if possible I will be able to get the law and order sound that they do every time they switch scenes. Something like “Dun, Dun” and then it will have pictures such as the 90 and blazer come onto the screen. Maybe the pictures will fade in. I still don’t know how it will happen because I have to talk to the people at the hub. But then I will say that the university provides Dining halls in order that the university can make it convenient and comfortable for the students, dining halls provide a spot where students can meet up, but they also provide a wide variety of high calorie food students can eat. There is a salad bar and fruit but when students are exposed to these unhealthier foods they are more likely to choose them. At this point in me talking I will be video taping one of my friends going up the salad bar and looking at it and then walking away to it to the desserts and picking up a cookie and eating it and then giving me the thumbs up. This is just a little skit that is set up to show how people will choose other things over salads. As this whole talk about dining halls I will provide a video of me walking around looking at all the types of food that can be found at the 90 I Then will then have a interview put into place of a guy that I met at the 90 and it will go like this.
·      Me: Are you a UK freshman
·      Chris: Yes
·      Me: How many meal swipes do you have?
·      Him: I have 14 but I only use about 12 a week
·      Me: Where do you usually go to use your meal swipes?
·      Chris: Chick-fil-a or the 90 I live in champions so its close, and then after class I usually get Chick-fil-a or panda express because my class is in White Hall and it’s so close.
·      Me: If you don’t mind me asking have you put on any weight since you have been here?
·      Chris: I’ve put on about 2 pounds so far but I don’t see that as a big problem.
·      Me: So what has been the hardest thing about College?
·      Chris: The transition between college work and high school work. There have been days when I’m up to 2 o’clock at the library and I know that the paper I’m about to be done typing is C quality at best. It is just so stressful.
From there I will transition to a video of myself talking with me in a chair and I have my leg folded and I’m sitting there in a suit. I just want to catch everyone of guard and make sure that everyone is paying attention. I will then say, “The amount of times I have been stressed out about school this semester is probably around the same amount of times I was stressed in all four years of high school.  In high school I could breeze through without really worrying. Sure there was the occasional test that I studied for and turned out good. College is different you actually have to devote a lot of time into what you are doing and even after you try really hard. I will still be talking and I will give facts about stress and as I say them they will pop up big on the screen and fade out as I say more facts such as according to psychologytoday.com “When your brain detects the presence of a threat, it triggers the release of a cascade of chemicals, including adrenaline, CRH, and cortisol.” After this sentence it will fade and the next one will start to come up as I continue talking “Your brain and body prepare to handle the threat by making you feel alert, ready for action and able to withstand an injury.” In the short-term, adrenaline helps you feel less hungry as your blood flows away from the internal organs and to your large muscles to prepare for “Fight.” “This is when this sentence will fade and the next one will start to appear.” However, once the effects of adrenaline wear off, cortisol, known as the “stress hormone,” hangs around and starts signaling the body to replenish your food supply.”( https://www.psychologytoday.com/) Then I will say in a voice over that decreased levels of exercise are also a huge cause of the dreaded Freshman 15. Here a quote will come up “” Evidence clearly shows that regular physical activity improves health Given these benefits one would expect participation in physical activity to be the norm. However, epidemiological evidence indicate that the level of physical activity declines from high school to college, and activity patterns in college populations are genially insufficient to improve health and fitness. Only 38% of college students participate in regular activities and only 20% participate in moderate activity. In contrast to 65% of High School students report regular activity and 26% report moderate activity. For the actual quote it will be silent and be a completely black screen with white bold letters tat appear to try to get the point across that this is a serious thing that we have to stop. It will be up for plenty of time so that the silence gets the point across to the class.
The silence will be broken by a video of some guy drinking irresponsibly in college. Possible try to get a video of a Louisville person or a Tennessee Person shot gunning a beer or something. It has to be a short clip 10 seconds max. It will be to try to get the point across that drinking in college is a big part.  From there I will have it go completely quite again.  With According to a national survey, almost 60 percent of college student’s ages 18-22 drank alcohol in the past month, and almost 2 out of 3 of them engaged in binge drinking during that same timeframe. Then it will go and fade in the background. Then About 20 percent of college students meet the criteria for an AUD (http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/) Will pop up an then it will slowly evaporate and then Alcohol Use Disorder is a condition characterized by the harmful consequences of repeated alcohol use, a pattern of compulsive alcohol use, and (sometimes) physiological dependence on alcohol (www.mentalhealth.com) and then it fade to all black again.
Then after that I’m going to have me say in a voice over “it isn’t all bad though. Well I guess some things aren’t that bad but freshman don’t actually gain as much as it is believed. The freshman 15 is more like the freshman 5. The average student gains between about 2.5 and 3.5 pounds during the first year of college. And college has little to do with the weight gain, the study revealed.  That will be said with a voice over and During this one of my friends getting all the food he could possible want at the 90 and another friend who is ordering at Chick Fil a will be shown. This will show that they don’t have to care about what they eat because it does not matter typical freshman only gains about a half-pound more than a same-age person who didn’t go to college. The study found that women gained an average of 2.4 pounds during their freshman year, while men gained an average of 3.4 pounds. No more than 10 percent of college freshman gained 15 pounds or more and a quarter of freshman reported actually losing weight during their first year.” While I’m saying this I’m going to have the words pop up as I say them that way the class will be able to follow along. Maybe in the background I can potentially have the song alleluia or if you’re happy and you know it playing in the background. This will hopefully set a happy tone for the ending of my project. Since most of my 5 minute video is serious facts about the freshman 15 I want to leave the class happy that it is more of a myth then anything. Then again I will say with a voice over “Yes freshman typically do gain weight but 5 pounds compared to 15 pounds is a lot. The study found that women gained an average of 2.4 pounds during their freshman year, while men gained an average of 3.4 pounds. No more than 10 percent of college freshman gained 15 pounds or more and a quarter of freshman reported actually losing weight during their first year.” “There has been concern that access to all you can eat cafeterias and abundant fast food choices, with no parental oversight, may lead to weight gain, but that doesn’t seem to hold true for most students,” The results do show, however, that college students do gain weight steadily over their college years. The typical woman gains between seven and nine pounds, while men gain between 12 and 13 pounds. “There has been concern that access to all you can eat cafeterias and abundant fast food choices, with no parental oversight, may lead to weight gain, but that doesn’t seem to hold true for most students,” he said. The results do show, however, that college students do gain weight steadily over their college years. The typical woman gains between seven and nine pounds, while men gain between 12 and 13 pounds. (http://researchnews.osu.edu) After all of these facts are spit at the audience I will come over and my voice will say. This wasn’t supposed to sway you in any direction. Obviously the freshman 15 is bad. This was more of an informative speech than anything. I was just trying to convince you that college students are living a very unhealthy life style. I hope all of you are called to go exercise and eat healthy. From there the credits will start and I will go through everyone who helped me out and I will give thanks to everyone who participated in it and that ill go on for maybe 10 seconds because the credits are boring and I don’t want to lose the classes attention and I will potentially have the Thank you song that I found on you tube. It will have the video playing in the background while it says  “T- H- A-N-K Y-O-U Thank you” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcfqDPAy7zc) a catchy tune in the Background while the credits are running over the screen. I want the class to leave happy and laughing because I believe I am the last one to go on that day and from there I am going to have Big THE END words pop up on the screen potentially try to get a Looney tunes the ending when the pig goes “That’s that’s that’s all folks” and a have cheering in the background like they did in old television shows and movies to symbolize that it is over. I want the overall video to be serious with a little humor, that way the audience is engaged the entire time yet they don’t get to bored and stare off into space. I don’t want to portray the Freshman 15 as a serious problem that is causing havoc on college freshman because evidence shows that it isn’t. I will still portray it as something we need to think about, I want my focus to be that even though it isn’t a real problem over time the numbers add up so we better change our eating habits as freshman now rather then later, that way we prevent ourselves from serious harm in the future.

Blog 7

So far my process of creating my documentary has been rough. I decided to change my topic because my last topic was boring and i didn't know what to really write about. I changed it to the Freshman 15. I changed it to this because it effects everyone in the class room and i know that everyone is worried about it. So far i have done a little research and learned that the freshman 15 is actually about the freshman 20. Im still doing research on why this happens and what can be done to change it but i believe it has to do with drinking alcohol and eating food from fast food chains because thats about the only thing around on college campuses to eat. I still don't know what can be done to solve this problem but I will find out soon. I still need to do a little more research and I should have it all planned out. This topic should be fun and have a lot of important information that the class will be able to take away and use. It should be a informative type of presentation. I don't plan on trying to sway the audience one way because the topic has a obvious good and bad side.
